Watch the Movie Here!Although I commend American film critics for showering praise on movies like The Wrestler, Slumdog Millionaire and Man On Wire, for me the best and most overlooked movie of 2008 was "Let The Right One In" (Lat den Ratte Komma), the Swedish vampire film starring two adorable kids and the breathtaking cinematography of D.O.P. Hoyte Van Hoytema.
The film is consistently creepy and sweet in nearly every scene, creating a feat of duality in which the tender scenes are alive with violent menace and the scenes of grisly carnage are tinged with erotic intimacy. While being a classic horror film which stays true to the Vampire mythos, it's also a touching coming-of-age story about the lonely, vulnerable emotions of children and the predatory, symbiotic nature of romantic love.
The film was adapted by John Ajvide Lindqvist from his novel of the same name, which was inspired this song by Morrisey (which leads me to believe he's probably a Stockholm hipster)
Let the Right One Slip in by Morrisey
Let the right one in
Let the old dreams die
Let the wrong ones go
They cannot
They cannot
They cannot do what you want them to do
Oh ...
Let the right one in
Let the old dreams die
Let the wrong ones go
They do not
They do not
They do not see what you want them to
Oh ...
Let the right one in
Let the old things fade
Put the tricks and schemes (for good) away
Ah ... I will advise
Ah ... Until my mouth dries
Ah ... I will advise you to ...
Ah ... let the right one slip in
Slip in
Slip in
And when at last it does
I'd say you were within your rights to bite
The right one and say, "what kept you so long ?"
"What kept you so long ?"
Oh ...
